Cape Town Opera’s production of Mozart’s great opera The Magic Flute opens this coming weekend at the Artscape Opera House. The opera is directed by Magdeline Minnaar and the conductor is the young South African SCHALK VAN DER MERWE, who was the 2019 winner of the Len van Zyl Conductor’s Competition and who has a very busy life conducting orchestras and teaching conducting in Pretoria. Schalk conducted his first opera, Mozart’s The Magic Flute when he was only 23 and is delighted to be conducting The Marriage of Figaro.
