On the first day of the case, former Free State Premier Ace Magashule said he may call unnamed to testify in his defence during the much-anticipated R255 million prosecution - and intends to apply for state funding for his defence. "I was Premier," Magashule said, before later adding: "I'm now going to apply for the funding." Should tax-payers foot the bill for someone accused of corruption? Should South Africa reconsider or tighten the rules around state-funded legal defences for public officials—especially in corruption cases?
