In Conversation With Zanele Sabela, National Spokesperson of the Congress of South African Trade Unions

South Africans continue to grapple with rising electricity costs, as the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) recently approved further tariff hikes for Eskom. These increases stem from a R54 billion settlement error, conceded by NERSA through a court process, which now allows Eskom to recover lost revenue from the public.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has voiced strong opposition to the decision, calling on government to urgently intervene. The labour federation argues that workers and ordinary citizens cannot afford this financial burden of Eskom’s operational and regulatory challenges. It has warned that if the state fails to act, it will be forced to mobilise workers and potentially embark on strike action to resist the hikes. COSATU maintains that electricity is a basic need, and further price increases will worsen poverty and inequality in the country.
