Predicting students’ academic performance is crucial to make evidence-based
decisions for admission and improve students’ support initiatives. However,
there is limited research (and student support initiatives) focusing specifically on
the students’ academic performance generally, and particularly male students.
Between 2020 and 2023, the University of the Witwatersrand’s Faculty of
Humanities had an average enrolment of 33,539 female and 13,357 male
students. In the same period, the average pass rate for female students in the
faculty was 92%, compared to 86% for male students. Between 2016 and 2020,
the average completion rate in the minimum required number of years for
female students in the faculty was 58%, compared to 43% for male students. It
is concerning that the female and male students who, relatively, have similar
school-leaving result have almost 60% of females completing in the minimum
required me compared to less than 45% of the male cohort.
