Joburg Water and Wits Team Up to Bring Borehole Water to Informal Settlements

In a groundbreaking move to address water access challenges in Johannesburg’s informal settlements, Joburg Water has partnered with Wits University on a pilot project that could bring clean, free water to thousands. The first borehole is being drilled just outside the Waterworks informal settlement near Lenasia, one of nine areas identified to benefit from the initiative. The borehole is strategically placed just meters from the community, and water tanks will be installed inside the settlement to ensure easy access for residents. Phemelo speaks to Waterworks Community Leader, Keletso Mbhele, about what this means for residents who have long struggled with limited water access.
