UN Pleads for Safe Passage as Sudan’s El-Fasher Falls Deeper into Chaos

The United Nations is calling for immediate safe passage for civilians trapped in Sudan’s war-ravaged city of El-Fasher, where paramilitary forces claim to have captured the army’s main base. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the situation as a “terrible escalation,” with residents facing unbearable suffering. Communication lines have been cut, and those who fled speak of mass killings and missing family members. The Rapid Support Forces’ advance could mark a turning point in the 18-month war, as El-Fasher is the army’s last stronghold in Darfur. “Hundreds of thousands are trapped - shelled, starving, and terrified,” said UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher. Phemelo speaks to Africa Advocacy Director at Human Rights Watch, Allan Ngari.
