Tensions are simmering in Westbury, where some residents say they’ve been shut
out of key Police Ministry engagements aimed at tackling crime and gangsterism.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia met with selected community leaders in
Sophiatown but others claim they were never informed. Community leader Eugene
Dooms says he only heard about the meeting on the news: “As activists, we should
be part of these discussions. We’re the ones living this reality.” Over the past few

weeks, at least eight people have been killed in gang-related shootings in Westbury
and nearby Reiger Park. Phemelo speaks to Ward 82 Councillor Assistant Bianca
Olivier about the community’s frustration.
