Shad Explosion In KZN - KZN REPORT (21 MAY '26)

The KZN coastline has shown a noticeable lift in activity over the past week, with winter conditions settling in and bringing solid fishing along the surf. Shad are the standout, with good numbers being caught along much of the coast, while the first signs of garrick are starting to appear. Anglers putting in the effort are also finding a mix of rockcod, kob, bronze bream, and occasional kingfish. Conditions have varied along the central coast with some dirty water, but there are still fish around, while the South Coast—particularly areas like Uvongo—has produced consistent action including GTs and rock species.
Offshore, fishing has improved steadily, with geelbek, daga salmon, and snoek featuring in catches, especially further north where deeper water has held better fish. Durban has remained fairly reliable, while further south anglers have had to work harder around changing conditions.
Inland, cooler temperatures have boosted stillwater trout fishing with good results reported, while river fishing is slowing as the season draws to a close. Yellowfish are still active in some systems, and although bass fishing has been quieter, a few fish are still being caught. Overall, conditions are improving, with plenty of opportunity for anglers as the weekend shows perfect weather conditions to keep those rods bending.
